KUDURA Power East Africa, a key partner of the Turkana County Government in clean energy provision, has successfully secured community acceptance to install two additional solar power mini-grids in rural Turkana.
This expansion aims to generate and distribute power across the region, increasing the total number of KUDURA Power mini-grid sites from 23 to 25.
A series of all inclusive public engagement meetings were held at Nadoto in Turkana Central and Pokotom in Turkana West. During these meetings, the community members pledged to provide land for the installation of the mini-grids in their respective areas, demonstrating their support for the project.
Deputy Director of Energy, Geoffrey Eregae, spoke at Nadoto, highlighted the county government’s role in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for energy provision and land acquisition processes.
“In order to ensure full compliance on the part of the service provider and that the interest of the community is well taken care of, we have an MoU with KUDURA that prescribes community entry through open daylight engagements. Today, we have witnessed that they are serious and we appreciate the community in giving them an opportunity,” Eregae said.
The county government has issued a letter of no objection to KUDURA Power after confirming their compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Following the community’s acceptance, the County Lands Surveyor, Steven Barasa demarcated the areas by taking coordinates to facilitate the installation of the mini-grids.
This process ensures that the designated land is properly allocated and prepared for the upcoming infrastructure.
During the meetings, KUDURA Power’s representative, Fred Nyongesa, addressed the community’s requests for corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
He assured the communities that KUDURA would progressively meet their demands, beginning with the installation of street lighting to enhance security and support a 24-hour economy.
