The County Department of Mining has pledged to closely monitor mining operations at the Kalomwae exploration site in Turkana South, following a consultative meeting with community members and project stakeholders.
The meeting aimed to address community concerns and reaffirm commitments between the investor, SMA Ltd, and the residents.
The County Mining Director, Merimug Eloto Nickson, reiterated that the investor would be held accountable to the environmental and social responsibility standards agreed upon with the community. “This project will benefit all parties involved. SMA Ltd has committed to upholding its responsibilities as agreed,” said Merimug.
Speaking on behalf of the community, David Nao requested the investor’s support to improve irrigation infrastructure. He cited that improved canal distribution would enhance water access across the scheme.
Pevaline Akale, another community representative, requested the investor to prioritize scholarships and youth employment opportunities. She also called for support elderly and disabled persons and boreholes for domestic and livestock use.
The investor representative, Mutakina Mohamed, emphasized the company’s commitment to working in partnership with the community during the gold extraction process. Present at the meeting were Deputy Mining Director Areman, county officers, National and County administrators, and the company representatives.
