1,500 Turkana Hub Youth with disabilities to gain from the Unlocking Opportunities Program

Youths with disabilities in Turkana will benefit from a three-year program led by Humanity & Inclusion in partnership with Mastercard Foundation.

The program be implemented in a consortium of 3 other partners; inABLE, Next Step Foundation and Riziki Source.

Humanity & Inclusion Country Manager , Ms. Margaret Nguhi, introduced the program during a courtesy call to the Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus.

“Humanity & Inclusion has largely worked within the refugee and humanitarian space. This time, we are happy to have a program that will go beyond the camp to benefit youths with disabilities outside the refugee setting,” she said.

The program targets will target 1,500 participants between 18 – 40 years. However, 80% of the opportunities will be reserved for young women as the men gets the remaining 20%.

“The main goal of the program is to ensure youths with disabilities get access to dignified and fulfilling work. The program focus will be; skilling for work, inclusive entrepreneurship for work, enhancing inclusion and voice, and strengthening the ecosystem,” Ms. Nguhi added.

Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus said expanding social protection to include host communities was both welcome and progressive.

He said that Turkana County had laid a foundation to ensure persons in need of social protection are included in planning, budgeting and execution.

“As a county, we are keen to ensure all partners in social protection participate in eliminating or reducing protection risks,” Dr. Erus said.

Deputy County Secretary in charge of administration Joseph Nyanga and the Humanity & Inclusion Turkana Area Manager, Mr. David Omondi, were present.
