The National Land Commission (NLC), working jointly with the County Government of Turkana and the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP), has completed a critical land verification exercise aimed at securing sites for the implementation of water infrastructure projects across Turkana.
The exercise seeks to verify and document parcels of land voluntarily set aside by communities for the construction of boreholes and associated facilities, including offices, generator houses, and ablution blocks.
The process involved capturing geographical coordinates and preparing Part Development Plans (PDPs), a key requirement in the land acquisition and planning process.
The team visited 10 project sites in Koribok, Lowarengak, Kaitese, Nariamawoi, Kalobeyei, Loturtur, Nangolekuruk, Lutubae, Lokwii, and Kangakimak.
Speaking during the engagement, NLC Coordinator Mark Ewesit commended local communities for supporting the project through voluntary land allocation.
“This exercise confirms that the land identified for the project belongs to the community and has been willingly provided for public use,” said Ewesit.
He noted that proper documentation of the land would safeguard both the community and the project from future ownership disputes.
“Our role is to ensure all legal and planning requirements are met before development begins. This process guarantees the project is implemented on land that has been properly verified and documented,” he added.
Ewesit further urged residents to continue supporting the initiative, noting that access to safe and reliable water remains a priority for sustainable development in Turkana.
The Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project is expected to improve water access and strengthen climate resilience among communities facing recurrent drought and water scarcity challenges.
With the verification exercise now complete, NLC is set to proceed with the next phase of land documentation, paving way for the commencement of project implementation and the delivery of sustainable water services to communities.
