County, NRT support Letea community conservancy board election

LETEA, July 20, 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

The County Government and Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) have intensified activities in Letea, Turkana West to support residents in electing members to the upcoming Community Conservancy Board.

The activities, which include stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and the development of a community conservancy action plan, were led by Director of Natural Resources Pauline Ng’oli and NRT’s Moses Kinapu.

Director Ng’oli said the activities were designed to ensure the community conservancy board is established in accordance to the law and begins its operations smoothly.

“Both the County and NRT have chosen to work closely with the administrative structures, local institutions, local leaders and the community to establish a board that will manage the upcoming conservancy,” Director Ng’oli said.

Residents welcomed the initiative, saying the trainings had empowered them to elect leaders capable of advancing conservancy efforts in the area.

“We now have a better understanding of the community conservancy model and its operations. As a community, we feel ready for the elections,” said Mariao Peyonon, a resident of Letea.

In his presentation, NRT Team Lead Moses Kinapu emphasized the importance of fair and transparent processes in electing board members, noting that the community was free to use either direct ballot or consensus to choose leaders.

Kinapu also highlighted best practices from areas such as Nasalot, where community conservancy boards have been formed and are yielding positive results.

Together with NRT, the County Government is seeking to use the community conservancy approach in Letea and other parts of Turkana West to advance conservation and improve livelihoods.
