County, Days for Girls Kenya target host and refugee girls with menstrual health kits

The County Government and Days for Girls Kenya will jointly reach girls and young women from host and refugee communities with 2,826 washable, reusable menstrual health kits and accompanying education in Kakuma Refugee Camp.

The initiative, which will run until December 2026, comes one month after the two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve menstrual and postpartum health outcomes in the region.

Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus, led the County delegation at a stakeholder meeting with the organization, noting that the program would address period poverty, school absenteeism, and reproductive health risks among the most vulnerable learners.

Dr. Erus called for strict adherence to national guidelines on menstrual health education and directed Days for Girls Kenya to formally engage the Directorate of Partnerships and Resource Mobilisation for inclusion in KIMIS, the County’s new information management system that maps development partner contributions in the refugee space.

Under the distribution plan, 40 per cent of the kits (1,130) will go to schools, while the remaining 60 per cent (1,696) will be channelled through health facilities and community-level interventions.

Days for Girls Kenya Project Manager Annete Muchendiza said the program’s strength lies in pairing distribution with education.

“It is our belief that the programme will help create a period-positive environment, not only in our schools but also in communities, especially those in the refugee setting at Kakuma and Kalobeyei. We will also include men and boys in the conversation to solicit their support in creating a period-friendly environment,” she said.

Muchendiza added that education would be delivered through an age-appropriate model, noting that the dual distribution approach — reaching both schools and health facilities — was a deliberate design choice.

“The inclusion of schools and health facilities was intentional, to capture both school-going and out-of-school girls and reduce the risk of infection arising from the use of unhygienic materials,” she explained.

Ahead of the rollout, Days for Girls Kenya will hold sub-county-level stakeholder meetings across Turkana West.

The organisation previously implemented menstrual health advocacy programmes in Turkana through local implementing partners, before entering into this direct partnership with the County Government.
