Turkana prepares for Land Compensation and Community Demarcation exercise

A joint government team from the Department of Lands and Physical Planning, State Department of Petroleum, and National Land Commission (NLC), has briefed the County Commissioner Julius Kavita on the upcoming activities in the county.

The team outlined plans for the issuance of compensation awards to approximately 3,600 Project Affected Persons (PAPs) affected by the upstream oil development project. The NLC noted that 200 Million Shillings has been set aside by the National Treasury for the first phase of compensation of affected development structures.

The Department of Lands and Physical Planning, led by Leah Losuru, also briefed the Commissioner on planned community sensitisation, land survey and demarcation in Lorengippi, Lokiriama and Nakurio.

CC Kavita urged the teams to uphold due diligence, transparency and proper verification during the compensation process, while assuring them of government support.

He also emphasised the importance of peacebuilding and meaningful community engagement.

The team later paid a courtesy call to the Office of the County Secretary, where Deputy County Secretary (Administration) Joseph Nyang’a, assured them of the County Government’s support and cooperation towards the successful implementation of the demarcation exercise and improved service delivery to the people of Turkana.
