Overview

The department of Agriculture, Pastoral Economy and Fisheries is a key contributor to food security in Turkana County. The Ministry core mandates revolve around provision of sustainable development and management of Agriculture, livestock and fisheries resources for food security and socio-economic development, improved livelihood resilience and food & nutrition security through sustainable infrastructure and increased.

In the quest to ensuring a food secure county, the government has invested much in flagship projects in respective directorates. These projects include; Veterinary Laboratory, Napeililim holding ground, Kerio Breeding Centre and Agricultural Training Centre.

In addition to flagship projects, the Ministry has worked hard to make sure extension services are provided to farmers, pastoralists, Agro-pastoralists and fisher folk in a very convenient and prompt manner. This has been enhanced through decentralization of vet drugs and supplementary livestock feeds to established cold chains/drug stores and feeds store at the sub-county level as well as use of e-surveillance system to track livestock diseases.

 

To improve market access and trade for livestock keepers and other market players, the Livestock Production directed has strategically established Sale yard in key migratory areas.
