FAO TO SUPPORT TURKANA COUNTY ON DIGITAL LAND GOVERNANCE PROGRAMME

County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Areas Management received Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Cluster III Technical Coordinator on Digital Land Governance Programme Ms Linda Opiyo in his office.

CEC Peter Akono welcomed the support from FAO and said the Lands Registry will receive a major boost as all the physical files in Lands Department will be digitised to ease accessibility and to avoid being lost or washed away by the floods from time to time.

“To enhance efficient and effective land governance through the digitisation of land records and processes, we would have moved a step further to paperless documentation of land records”. Stated Akono.

He appealed to FAO to help ascertain rights and interests in land for all, and hasten recognition, protection and registration of community land rights to secure tenure and support the establishment of an integrated application approach on land records digitisation and information management system.

Coordinator Opiyo had paid a visit to the CECM to launch digital land governance programme technical committee in which CEC Lands will be a substantive chair.

She briefed the team on the programme which was launched in April 2022 and will be ending on 31st March 2027.

“The programme is geared towards improved security of tenure and equitable access to land and natural resources for enhancement of livelihoods and sustainable social economic development in Turkana,” Said Opiyo.

The programme, she adds, envisions improved food and nutrition security, livelihood and sustainable development through equitable and secure access and management of land as outlined in vision 2030.

The programme is implemented in all the 47 counties and divided in seven clusters of which Turkana County is in cluster three comprising of six North Rift Counties.

The programme in Turkana is implemented by a County Technical Committee which CEC Lands is the chair, The FAO’s Focal person becomes the Secretary,and the members are; Physical planner, Land surveyor, Land registrar, Adjudication, Legal, Agricultural and Environment Officers, Economic planner, inter-religious rep, and a nominee from the County Commissioner’s Office.

Those present were Joseph Egiron (Director Surveys), Galgalo Bora (NLC),Stephen joroge (Physical Planner), Stephen Barasa( County Surveyor), Kevin Obota(Lands), Mbotela William(Environment),Joseph Losengei (Economist), Aaron Nanok(County Agri-Nutrition).
