Stakeholders in the field of Natural Resources in Turkana have concluded a one-day meeting where sustainable utilization and improved management of resources dominated their discussions.
The meeting also served as a platform for the formation of a committee to oversee the planning of the International Day of Forestry (IDF), a global calendar event marked annually on the 21st of March.
In his address at the meeting, Chief Officer for Natural Resources Joseph Ekalale Imoni stressed the need for such coordination fora to safeguard Turkana from the loss of its natural resources.
Chief Officer Ekalale emphasized the need for the adoption of new technologies and innovations for better management of natural resources.
“Sustainable utilization of natural resources is possible only if we strengthen the structures of resource governance, adopt conflict-sensitive approaches, and promote climate-smart adaptations,” Chief Officer Ekalale said.
Additionally, the Chief officer called upon the sector players to document their interventions and share the same with the County to avoid duplication of efforts.
The meeting was also attended and addressed by Clement Nadio (Director, NRM), Pauline Pusiye (Deputy Director, NRM), and representatives of Kenya Forestry Service, Water Resource Authority, National Environment Management Authority, Turkana Livelihood Diversification Organization, Caritas Lodwar and World Vision.
