COUNTY ENGAGES ASSEMBLY MEMBERS OVER BOUNDARY MAPS FOR REGISTRATION OF LOKIRIAMA, KATILU AND KALOBEYEI AS COMMUNITY LAND

The County Government’s effort to facilitate the registration of Lokiriama, Katilu, and Kalobeyei to pave the way for the issuance of title deeds as community land has advanced following the completion of boundary maps for these areas.

At a meeting convened to discuss the registration, the draft land boundary maps were presented to a section of the Turkana County Assembly Members for their feedback and recommendations.

The Chief Officer for Lands, Physical Planning, and Housing, Leah Losiru, emphasized that the move was part of the government’s broader strategy to fast-track the process of community land registration, aiming to enhance the welfare of residents.

“As a Department, we are pleased to announce the completion of boundary maps for Lokiriama, Katilu, and Kalobeyei with the assistance of our consultants. Should the draft maps be approved, they will be subjected to public scrutiny before implementation,” CCO Losiru said.

She further explained that the maps aligned with the County’s existing 10-year land use plans (2023–2033), which have undergone public consultation.

If ratified by the County Assembly, the proposal to register these three locations as community land will officially commence.

The comprehensive plan also earmarks other urban towns for such critical exercise, including Kalokol, Kerio, Lokitaung, Lokichoggio, Lokori, Kainuk, Lowarengak, and Kapedo.

Under the leadership of the current administration, Turkana has made significant strides in its quest to promote access to title deeds.

The process implies that the area qualifies for further cadastral mapping and registration processes culminating in the issuance of a deed as community land.

The maps have demarcated areas for agricultural production, pastoralism, town centers and service offices, public social amenities, roads and passageways, and land for possible expansion as anticipated by the globally accepted Urban planning practice.
