Karuko, April 10, 2024 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

The County Government of Turkana has concluded the drilling of a new borehole at Karuko, Lokori/Kochodin Ward in Turkana East to serve the Arumrum-Alokaran kraal and the surrounding communities.

The borehole presents an opportunity to boost water access thereby reducing the distances walked in search of it to nearly 20 kilometers once equipped and officially opened for public use.

The residents, mostly leading nomadic lifestyle, have been depending on Lopii and Karuko water sources that are approximately 30 Kilometres apart for their use.

The Chief Officer for Water Services David Maraka said that the initiative was part of the FY’2023/2024 projects by the county to reduce the water access challenges in line with the Governor’s priority agenda, which focuses on ensuring universal access to water.

Chief Maraka divulged details that both Turkana East and Suguta subcounties would benefit from the Horn of Africa initiative for more projects aimed at further reducing the distances traveled by human beings and livestock to access water.

Turkana East Sub-county Water Officer, Henry Eipa coordinated the intervention and ensured its completion.

While welcoming the new development, Lokidor, a resident, said, we appreciate the efforts by the Water Department in making the dream a success.”
