Water secretary at the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Engineer Samwel Alima is leading a team from Kenya in a five-day visit in Denmark for talks on Kenya-Denmark partnership. Turkana County is part of the delegation through Chief Officer for Water Services David Maraka.

Engineer Alima clarified that the delegation was expected to take part in partnership meetings, trainings and engagement with Water Sector agencies in Denmark for information exchange to inform partnership building.

Upon arrival in Denmark, the team embarked on a series of meetings with various Danish agencies focused on collaborations in ground water extraction, water use diversification and sustainable environmental protection.

Chief Maraka said the talks also focused on investment environment in the water sector and opportunities available for investors, role of financial institutions and the participation of finance regulators.

“The meetings narrowed down on how to leverage on Danish partners in driving the water agenda for all. In our presentation, we emphasised on support for the implementation of the 25 -year master plan for water supply in Lodwar,” CCO said.

On the second day, the team was exposed to models of governance in the water sector through a training by Danish Water Regulatory Agency.

He acknowledged the training was handy in addressing the emerging societal inequalities in water access due to the dynamic water tariffs.

It is anticipated that the visit will bear fruits on provision of technical assistance, knowledge transfer especially in hydrology and open up opportunities for manpower development.
