TURKANA WEST TO BENEFIT FROM JOINT CLIMATE PROOF WASH PROJECT BY COUNTY AND PARTNER

The County Government and a consortium of partners are set to roll out a three-year program aimed at developing sustainable safe water, hygiene, and sanitation (WASH) solutions targeting host and refugee communities in Turkana West.

At a series of separate meetings with the County Department of Health and Sanitation and, that of Water Services, it emerged that the plan targets Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), drill and solar equip five high-yielding multi-use boreholes in addition to the construction of sanitation facilities in the three years between 2024-2026.

Additionally, the project will Integrate nutrition intervention, Youth and Adolescent Health, Maternal and Child Health, WASH governance, and livelihood projects.

The consortium includes Water Mission, Swiss Contact, PLAN International, and SAPCONE each focussing on a particular mandate in the planned scheme of work.

County Chief Officer for Preventive and Promotive, Cathra Abdi, urged the consortium members to utilize joint planning approaches to maximize the positive outcome of the joint intervention.

“The project has the potential to open up opportunities for women and youth employment by taking part in income-generating activities envisioned by the market-led WASH intervention,” Chief Officer, Cathra Abdi observed.

Director for Public Health and Sanitation, Alfred Emanman, welcomed the project noting its potential to boost the County’s WASH coverage.

Speaking on behalf of the consortium members, Jessica Lomong’in, the WASH Program Coordinator from PLAN International said that the visit was meant to brief the County Departments directly implementing WASH programs.

Jessica Lomongin added that the project members and the respective County departments had planned a site identification exercise aligned with the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP).

Joseph Lemakiyo (Project Coordinator, Swiss Contact) and Anthony Ondicho (Water Mission) were also present.
