This year’s World Environment Day event in Turkana will be held at Kalobeyei on June 5, 2024, Chief Officer for Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change, Joseph Ekalale, has revealed.
“Kalobeyei is the perfect location for sensitizing both the host and refugee communities residing in Turkana of the dangers of environmental degradation and the need for urgent adoption of conservation measures,” Chief Officer Ekalale said.
The Chief Officer described World Environment Day as a global event in the UN calendar aimed at amplifying the need for environmental conservation through the adoption of climate-smart practices.
“As a county, we have lined up awareness creation, town clean-up exercises, speeches, and exhibitions to commemorate the day. I therefore urge the public to take part by turning up in large numbers,” Chief Officer Ekalale said.
The Director for Environment, Phoebe Ekal, stressed the need for collaborative efforts in combating the negative impacts of climate change by calling on partners to support the event.
Partners representatives included UNHCR, GIZ, Peace Winds Japan, Lokado, and World Vision Kenya, among others.
