The County Government of Turkana, through its Directorate of Natural Resource Management, has launched a major tree planting exercise at David Lee Secondary School in Turkwel Ward, Loima Sub County. The initiative aims to promote environmental conservation and climate change mitigation.

Led by County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) Audan Leah Lokala and James Wangiros, the event was attended by Turkana County Commissioner Julius Kavita. The CECM emphasized the importance of planting a variety of tree species, including indigenous and fruit-bearing ones, to encourage community involvement.

Commissioner Kavita praised the county government for aligning with President William Ruto’s directive to increase Kenya’s forest cover by planting 15 billion trees by 2030. The event aimed to inspire secondary students to participate in environmental conservation by planting and caring for trees at home and in their school compound.

The tree planting exercise follows the county’s recent commemoration of World Environment Day 2024, during which stakeholders in natural resource management pledged to drive the tree planting agenda forward across the county.
