The County Government of Turkana has established an inclusive sector secretariat to coordinate and streamline interventions by various actors in Trade and Enterprise Development ventures within the county.

The formation of the secretariat was announced during a review meeting for the January-March 2024 period, the third quarter of the 2023-2024 financial year.

Speaking at the closure of the meeting, David Erukudi, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Gender and Youth Affairs, stated that the secretariat will play a crucial role in managing information sharing and boosting the effectiveness of partners’ interventions.

The CECM emphasized the critical importance of strategic partnerships in creating a more conducive environment for trade to prosper in Turkana.

While welcoming the formation of the secretariat, CECM Erukudi expressed confidence that it would help solve the perennial challenge of duplication of efforts by actors in the Trade and Enterprise Development sector in Turkana.

Additionally, the CECM highlighted completed projects within the third quarter as clear indicators of the County’s commitment to fostering inclusivity in the trade sector.

Robert Loyelei, the Chief Officer for Trade and Enterprise Development, expressed optimism that the newly formed steering committee would drive the Trade agenda forward. He noted that the focus on forming trade cooperatives was crucial in opening up the sector for further development and called for more regular reviews to come up with additional initiatives.

The Chair of the Turkana Chapter of the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) emphasized the need to establish platforms for information sharing and standardized documentation of actors’ interventions in the sector.

The meeting resolved that the steering committee will be chaired by a representative from the County Department of Trade, with membership drawn from partner organizations, Chambers of Commerce, and state actors.
