Turkana County’s Lake Zone is set to benefit from the Blue Economy Strategic Resilience and Livelihood Program (BESRLP), a project aimed at transforming the economic potential around Lake Turkana.
As part of the ongoing Vijanainkilimobizz Mastercard Foundation initiative, the BESRLP is implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) to enhance resilience and livelihood in the fish value chain. This effort includes the recruitment of new Beach Management Unit (BMU) representatives at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in Kalokol.
Speaking during an engagement with the newly recruited BMUs and traders in the fish and marine value chain, Senior Fisheries Officer Dismas Kamar outlined that Lake Turkana is capable of producing up to 30,000 metric tons of fish annually, three times the current production. “When commercialized and value-added, this production could significantly enhance the quality of life and income for the communities along its shores,” Kamar stated.
Kamar emphasized that the BMUs will act as Fish Farmers Service Centers linked to the Department of Fisheries and other partners to promote sustainable interventions and boost fish businesses. He encouraged youth and women within the BMUs to apply for empowerment funds and loans.
A representative from the World Food Programme urged the BMUs to develop their skills and leadership within their community associations while maintaining detailed records of their supply chain analysis, tracking resource mobilization, and profit generation to ensure sustainable income.
Kalokol fish farmer Peter Nachuchu commended the WFP for strategic interventions such as providing mobile freezers and motorbikes for fish agents from active BMUs, like Impreza Fish Banda and Chap Chap Dry Fish Traders.
Inspired by the WFP, women in Eliye have formed a basketry weaving association, activating their business and registering as a newly recruited BMU center.
