The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Development, and Fisheries convened with the County Assembly Committee of Agriculture and stakeholders to deliberate on the development of the Turkana County Agricultural Coordination Bill 2024.

The bill aims to establish an administrative framework for coordination, cooperation, collaboration, and consultation among stakeholders and partners within the agriculture sector.

Speaking at the formulation workshop, County Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation Janerose Tioko emphasised the need for stakeholder coordination in the sector, which she said is important in transforming agriculture.

“All the stakeholders and partners across the sector need to work in a coordinated manner to ensure effectiveness in the utilisation of available resources to spur agriculture,” she said.

She further said that consultation and cooperation will ensure adequate capacity among sector institutions and program organisations to deliver on food security through the development and implementation of conducive policies, strategies, regulations, and plans.

The workshop, which was supported by Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme II (ASDSP II), sought the Agricultural Committee’s insights to enrich the bill, fostering the strengthening of structures for coordination in the agriculture sector.

The engagement confirms the Department’s intention to enhance agricultural reforms in the county for success in realising the food security agenda.

Also present at the workshop were Dr. Ezekiel Etelej (Chief Officer of livestock Development and Veterinary), Evans Lomodei (Chief Officer of fisheries and Aquaculture), Aaron Nanok (County Director of Agriculture), and Boniface Okita (ASDSP II Coordinator).

Members of the county assembly were represented by Hon. Gilbert Topos and Hon. Michel Epem.

The office of the county attorney was led by county solicitor Ruth Emanikor, director of litigation Ekal Lokuruka, and counsel Joyce Akai Erumu.
