The county government and KaKuma-based peace actors have agreed to jointly support a three-day football tournament, dubbed the “Governor’s Ateker Cup,” scheduled to take place from August 22 to 24 at the Kalobeyei Sports Complex.
The tournament aims to provide a platform for local youth to showcase their football talents and serve as a peace-building initiative between host and refugee communities in Turkana West.
During a planning meeting, the County Executive for Tourism, Culture, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Audan Leah Lokala, announced that teams from the neighbouring Uganda, South Sudan, and Ethiopia would be formally invited to participate as they are members of the Ateker community.
“The tournament aligns with this year’s theme of peace. Currently, we have the support of SAPCONE, Danish Church Aid and TUPADO, and we have also reached out to BOMA, GIZ, Lutheran World Federation, and Film Aid for additional support,” Lokala stated.
The planning meeting was also attended by Abdul Lomuria – Director for Tourism and Ronald Erukan, Deputy Director of Administration.
It is expected that the directorate of Tourism will issue registration procedures and develop fixtures jointly with the directorate of sports.
