The County Department of Health and Sanitation and LOKADO are seeking to strengthen WASH system with comprehensive planned activities targeting selected wards in Turkana North, Turkana West and Lokichoggio sub-counties.
The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) system strengthening will be achieved through intensified community trainings focused on menstrual health management, and sanitation and nutrition linkages.
This is expected to an holistic approach to improve the well-being of communities in Nakaalale and Lakezone ward in Turkana North; Kakuma, Lopur, Letea, Kalobeyei in Turkana West; and finally in Songot and Nanam in Lokichoggio.
One of the county public health officers, Mary Loter, highlighted that the activities would involve stakeholders from the community, schools, and healthcare facilities to promote a participatory understanding of the WASH system.
“We will engage WASH stakeholders to create an understanding of the WASH system to ensure that the program is effective and sustainable in improving the health and well-being of our communities,” she said.
As one of the health promotion officers, Nancy Birech, added that sanitation and nutrition linkages training would focused on promoting good hygiene practices and healthy eating habits among school going children.
The Program Officer for LOKADO, Dennis Ekiru, emphasized the need for inter-sectoral collaboration and coordination among the directorates of water, nutrition, public health, and Water Resource Authority to ensure a cohesive approach to WASH integration.
In attendance were Sub-county Public Health Officers, water department officers, and Water Resource Authority officers.
