COUNTY, GIZ TRAINS STAFF ON ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

Environment, Climate Change and Energy county officers have concluded a five-day workshop on environmental management, climate change mitigation measures. The workshop trained them on sustainable strategies to tackle climate-related challenges.

The training, conducted in partnership with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and Turkana University College (TUC), is the second phase. The first phase equipped staff with skills on Fundamentals of Renewable Energy Technologies (FRETs).

The initiative supported by GIZ’s led Energy Solutions for Displacement Settings Program (ESDS) seeks to address competency gaps in the workplace and enable officers to deliver more effectively.

The County Chief Officer for Energy and Petroleum, Trizer Amoni, highlighted that the training was a huge success. She emphasised the significance of embracing the learn, unlearn, and relearn principle among the staff to keep up with the pace of changing knowledge in the climate change sector.

“The county has rolled out climate change mitigation mechanisms to guide towards best environmental practices. Therefore, this training paves the way for expertise on such practices in Turkana,” stated CCO Amoni.

Chief Amoni urged the trainees to carry all the knowledge acquired from this training and incorporate it into their respective departments’ activities.

Deputy Director for Energy Geoffrey Eregae addressed the need to pay attention to renewable energy and extend skills on energy savings to the local community to enhance sustainability. Further, he noted that the gained knowledge will enable the government to mainstream matter energy, environmental, and Climate Change.

The County Senior Climate Change Officer, Philemon Ekadeli, shared his gained experience stating that, this training has been educative and transformative. Additionally, he acknowledged that such skills will make their work easier and contribute to the realization of the county’s environmental management and climate change mitigation.

The Workshop Facilitator, Dr Joseph Lolemtum, covered a comprehensive range of topics on Climate Change adaptation which includes the crucial understanding and implementing of effective strategies to address climate change and later discussed a broader aspects of environment.

The event was attended by Hosea Ameripus (Assistant Director for Administration) and officials from Turkana University College, GIZ and County Government.
