The County Government, in collaboration with Practical Action, has launched a project to improve water access for residents of Katilu and Lolupe through sustainable energy solutions. The partnership involves equipping new boreholes and upgrading existing ones with solar energy, allocating 140 solar panels for the pilot phase targeting Katilu in Turkana South and Lolupe in Turkana Central.

During a meeting to discuss the project’s implementation, the County Executive for Water Services, Patrick Losike Lokaimoe, stated, “This initiative is part of Turkana’s broader strategy to harness the region’s abundant solar energy resources.” He stressed the importance of an inclusive approach that considers both the commercial and social needs of the intended beneficiaries.

The Chief Officer for Energy, Petroleum Production, and Mining, Triza Amoni, added, “We are committed to supporting this project by ensuring the solar panels are regularly checked and maintained.” She also mentioned that the department is working towards equipping public institutions, such as schools and hospitals, with solar energy systems.

Practical Action’s team lead, Alberto Ibanez, emphasized the importance of utilizing the region’s abundant solar energy while considering the impacts of climate change. He noted, “The success of this pilot project will guide potential future expansions.”

The meeting was attended by Jackson Lojore (Director for Energy and Petroleum Production), Geoffrey Eregae (Deputy Director of Energy), Joel Ombok (North Rift Coordinator, Practical Action), and other department officials.
