Turkana County welcomed the Deputy Mayor of Utrecht, Rachel Streefland, during her recent visit aimed at fostering development and exploring new avenues of collaboration.
The discussions centered on strengthening the partnership between Turkana County and Utrecht, focusing particularly on integrating services for refugees and the host communities in Lodwar and Kakuma municipalities.
Deputy Mayor Streefland commended the ongoing efforts in Turkana, expressing Utrecht’s commitment to supporting inclusive societal initiatives, such as the renowned Plan Einstein, which is designed to foster harmonious living between refugees and host communities.
Streefland emphasized the need for overarching solutions to create an inclusive society, proposing further exploration and cooperation in various sectors. She also lauded Turkana’s efforts in capacity building, highlighting the municipality’s success in programs aimed at enhancing the integration of refugees.
Dr. John Erus expressed gratitude to the people of the Netherlands for their invaluable contributions to Turkana County. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the working relationship between the two regions, noting the strategic focus on implementing the Shirika Plan, which integrates development initiatives across the county.
The Deputy Governor outlined key areas where support is needed, including urban management, healthcare (especially the establishment of a Level 5 hospital), and creating a conducive business environment for local entrepreneurs.
“Our strategic position necessitates support in healthcare, urban management, and technology to optimize water resources through ecosystem restoration,” Dr. Erus stated. “We also look forward to continued collaboration on social protection programs for both refugees and the host community.”
CECM for Trade, David Erukudi, acknowledged the joint efforts with partners on various projects and highlighted the need for further collaboration in economic empowerment, solarization of markets, and capacity building for the business community.
CECM for Lands and Urban Areas, Faith Aletia underscored the importance of support in land mapping, waste management, road network improvements, and the formulation of policies on land and urban planning. She emphasized the need for capacity building in these areas to enhance community development and peace-building efforts.
Chief Officer for Energy and Petroleum, Triza Amoni discussed the challenges faced in the extractive sector, noting that traditional mining methods are still prevalent. She called for support in establishing a gemstone center, training miners in sustainable practices, and setting up value addition centers for gold and gemstones. This initiative aims to upskill both refugees and the host community, enhancing their economic opportunities.
The meeting was also attended by DCS Ngamoe ,Chief Officers Robert Loyelei and Peter Lomurkai, Directors James Lokwale and Christopher Eregae, Kakuma Municipality Manager Peter Amuya, Lodwar Deputy Municipality Manager Nangiro, and delegations from Utrecht and VNG.
