Korinyang – 25th, September 2024 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

The County Government has been conducting a livestock vaccination exercise in Aroo Sub-County, targeting Cattle, Sheeps and Goats.

Chief Officer for Livestock Development, Dr Gilchrist Lokoel, said that the exercise has been necessitated by a recent lumpy skin disease outbreak in the area.

“We received reports of suspected lumpy skin disease in cattle at Korinyang Village Unit by the local Community Disease Reporters, which prompted this intervention,” CCO Lokoel said.

He also added that the objective is to also treat and stop the spread of contagious diseases, which occurs as herders move their animals.

The vaccination exercise is a collaborative effort by the County Government and Anglican Development Services (ADS) has been running for one week targeting affected livestock for treatment, deworming and vaccination.

CCO Dr Lokoel appreciated ADS for the support as he called for more involvement from other partners and cooperation in managing lumpy skin disease as well as upscaling livestock vaccination efforts across the County.

“The socio-economic losses associated with livestock diseases is huge, hence the need to join hands in eradicating and curbing the spread of such diseases,” he said.

In order to protect livestock in Aroo Sub-County, the CCO said that veterinary officers will be on the ground to vaccinate and treat all animals affected by the disease.

ADS Project Manager, Benard Nambanga, thanked the County Government for the supporting the exercise through provision of vaccines and vet officers.

“ADS has facilitated the exercise through logistical support as well as Officers facilitation,” he said.

He also noted the need to expand their operations through other projects aimed at enhancing livelihoods to realize food security in the region.

Dr Lokoel also had an engagement with Kraal leaders in the region who appreciated the County and ADS for the timely response as they called for extensive coverage for all the animals spread across the more than five kraals in the region.

In his supervision tour, CCO Lokoel also visited animal health support infrastructures, including the Korinyang crusher site and Lokichar Cold Chain facility, to ascertain their status.

The CCO was accompanied by Director of Veterinary Services Dr Benson Longor and his Deputy, Dr Erenious Nakadio and ADS Northrift team.
