The County Alternative Justice System (AJS) has successfully resolved a land dispute between two Kalokol families, ending a conflict that had persisted for years.
CEC for Lands, Physical Planning, and Urban Areas Management, Faith Aletia, hailed the resolution as a significant milestone in bringing lasting peace to the families involved, noting that it would quell the long-standing animosity between them.
An independent investigation by the AJS team revealed that the conflict had extended beyond the two families, creating divisions within the Kalokol community and contributing to unrest.
Delivering the ruling after carefully reviewing submissions from both parties, AJS Chair Yusuf Aremon emphasized that the community as a whole was the real beneficiary of the process.
“All parties have accepted the resolution, with land ownership clearly established. Both sides have agreed to the ruling and are committed to rebuilding the relationships damaged by years of hostility,” said Aremon.
The AJS, a County entity supported by the Kenyan court system, provides an alternative mediation process aimed at resolving land disputes more efficiently than the often lengthy and complex legal procedures.
Established in Turkana in 2022, the AJS has successfully mediated several land disputes across the county.
Attendees during the resolution included Chief Officer for Physical Planning Robert Loyelei, Advocate Lele Ikapolon, Lodwar Court Administrator Lotiir John, and members of the AJS team.
The ruling was made in the presence of elders from the Kalokol area.
