The Turkana County Government has received eight fiberglass boats and safety equipment from the USAID Nawiri program to enhance fishing production in the region. The equipment will be distributed to Beach Management Units (BMUs) to improve both profitability and food security.

Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus officiated the handover ceremony on Tuesday, 15 October 2024, emphasizing the importance of effective leadership, governance, and monitoring frameworks for equitable development across Turkana sub-counties.

USAID Nawiri Mission Director David Gosney highlighted the program’s success in strengthening livelihoods, citing numerous community success stories. “Our vision of building resilient livelihoods has been realized,” he said.

Key initiatives under the Nawiri program include improved healthcare, climate-resilient farming, and youth and women-led enterprises. These efforts align with the Governor Jeremiah Ekamais Lomurukai Napotikan nine-point agenda, which prioritizes water access, nutrition, agriculture, and food security.

The CECM for Livestock Production and Fisheries, Dr. Anthony Apalia, emphasized the significance of the blue economy for Turkana’s resilience and livelihood stability. Turkana West MP Paul Ekuwom Nabuin commended the ongoing development and stressed the importance of long-term partnerships for a food-secure and climate-resilient community.
