Lodwar, 23rd October 2024 (Governor’s Press Service) — Lokichoggio Sub-County won the Ateker Peace Tournament final this evening.
After a stalemate over the regular 90 minutes, Lokichoggio triumphed over a spirited Loima team in a penalty shootout.
Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai and his West Pokot counterpart, Simon Kachapin, attended the exciting final at Lodwar Primary School. The two-day event, organised by the County Government, attracted 14 teams and served as a build-up to the Turkana Cultural and Tourism Festival, which officially begins tomorrow.
The tournament, dubbed “Sports for Peace,” drew participants from neighbouring countries, including South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Uganda. Teams from West Pokot and Baringo counties also participated. Governor Lomorukai congratulated all teams for their participation and reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to leverage sports as a platform for peace initiatives.
He noted that the tournament showcased the sporting talents of the youth and promised to make it an annual event. Governor Kachapin praised the County Government for organizing the peace event and emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence in driving development programs.
Woman Representative Cecilia Ishuu and West Pokot Deputy Governor Robert Komolle were in attendance. Senior County Government officials present included Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyang’a: County Executives David Erukudi (Trade), Peter Akono (Roads), Elizabeth Loote (Education), and Leah Audan (Tourism).
