The Turkana County Department of Health and Sanitation, in collaboration with UNICEF Kenya and Peace Winds Japan Kenya, is set to implement a work plan to improve sanitation and hygiene practices under the Kenya Sanitation Enabling Environment Project (KSEEP II).

The project, funded by USAID, aims to accelerate the elimination of open defecation through community-led total sanitation (CLTS) approaches in 267 villages across Turkana West and Turkana South Sub-counties.

County Public Health Officer Innocent Sifuna emphasized the importance of collective action to achieve this goal. He stated, “The implementation of improved sanitation and hygiene early is critical in accelerating the pace towards ending Open Defecation by 2025.”

Akiko Chiba, Country Representative of Peace Winds Japan, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to supporting regular monitoring and coordination of CLTS activities. She added that joint support supervision would be crucial for advocacy and ensuring the project’s success.
