The Kakuma Municipality board members, led by Chairperson John Ewesit, have completed a four-day induction program to lay the foundation for effective service delivery in the municipality.

The program, organized by the County Government of Turkana, focused on equipping board members with essential skills and knowledge. Key topics included resource mobilization, financial management, strategic planning, and understanding the roles and responsibilities of board members as outlined in the Urban Areas and Cities Act.

Facilitators from the Kenya School of Government, Gachagua Patrick and Brian Obiero, led the training sessions.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Physical Planning, and Urban Areas Management, Faith Aletea, underscored the importance of collaboration and community engagement in the board’s operations.

“The law is clear on the roles of municipal boards, and I encourage you to cultivate an environment of continuous engagement with the community to identify and address their needs,” said Aletea.

She urged the board members to frequently consult legal provisions and seek advice from relevant institutions to ensure they operate within the law.

The CECM emphasized that fostering transparency and accountability through active citizen participation is vital for building trust between the board and the community.

“Governance is most effective when there is a shared vision with the people we serve,” she noted.

Edwin Chabari, Camp Manager from the Department of Refugee Services, praised the induction for its holistic approach, which he said would be instrumental in addressing the dynamic needs of Kakuma’s diverse population.

Other officials present included Halima Dubai, Deputy Manager; Isaiah Lomorukai from VNG International; and Esuron David Eyenae from the office of the County Attorney, currently acting as the County Solicitor.
