Turkana County Government, through its Directorate of Climate Change, has convened a strategic meeting with Ward Climate Change Planning Committees (WCCPCs) to evaluate the progress of Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) projects.
The forum also aimed to identify and prioritize new projects for the 2024-2025 financial year.
The meeting, held in Lodwar, brought together ward administrators from Lokiriama, Loima, and Turkana Central sub-counties, as well as departmental officials, community stakeholders, and representatives of persons living with disabilities (PWDs).
Key discussions centered on the status of ongoing FLLoCA projects, challenges encountered, and strategies for enhancing the County’s climate change mitigation efforts. Participants also reviewed financial allocations, technical support needs, and project timelines to ensure effective implementation.
The County Director of Climate Change, George Emase Lodung’o, emphasized the importance of local Community involvement in combating climate change.
“Ward Climate Change Planning Committees are essential in identifying pressing local needs and ensuring sustainable, impactful solutions,” he said.
The FLLoCA program focuses on empowering communities to address climate-related challenges. Current projects include initiatives in water management, rangeland restoration, pasture reseeding, and agricultural development.
Kenya Red Cross Project Officer, Kevin Obuya, commended Turkana County’s commitment to climate resilience. “The County has developed a holistic framework to guide partners’ interventions, addressing the vulnerabilities of livelihoods and socio-economic sectors affected by climate change,” he stated.
Recommendations from the forum will inform project planning and resource allocation for the next financial year, reaffirming Turkana’s commitment to locally-led climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
