COUNTY ROLLS OUT DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT SENSITIZATION

Lodwar, 22 November 2024 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

The Turkana County Government has initiated a comprehensive sensitization exercise on Disaster Risk Management laws, targeting village, ward, and sub-county level administrators.

The five-day exercise aims to equip administrators with the skills to implement the legal framework and enhance the county’s readiness to respond to disasters.

Speaking during one of the forums, Chief Officer for Administration and Disaster Management, David Maraka, emphasized that administrators are the primary implementors of the law and the starting point for all response efforts.

Noting the need for collaborative approaches, Maraka challenged administrators to identify potential partners in their areas and establish standby response committees to prepare for potential disasters.

In Turkana East, Assistant County Commissioner Osman Yakub highlighted the timeliness of the sensitization, given the increasing threat of climate change-induced disasters. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the county and national governments to effectively protect citizens.
