The Turkana County Government has initiated a relief food distribution program to assist vulnerable communities in Suguta Sub-County, a region known for its security challenges and harsh climatic conditions.

The initiative aims to mitigate the impact of climate change-induced food insecurity that has affected the region.

Suguta, a newly established sub-county in Turkana East, has been particularly vulnerable to recurrent food shortages due to extreme weather conditions and security challenges.

The Chief Officer for Administration and Disaster Management, David Maraka, confirmed that 150 bags of relief food would be distributed to local communities and schools in areas such as Napeitom, Ngilukia, Kamuge, Silale, Kangayama, Nadome, Lomelo, Kapetasekon, and Emeyan. Kapedo Mixed Primary and Kapedo Girls School are also included in the distribution list.

In a gesture of cross-border solidarity, the distribution extended to communities in neighboring Baringo County.

“This is part of a strategic plan to foster cross-border cooperation and address hunger collaboratively,” said Maraka during the distribution event in Kapedo.

He emphasized the county government’s commitment to supporting all its citizens, including those in remote and marginalized areas.

The food distribution was carried out in collaboration with the local Member of Parliament’s office to ensure inclusivity and target the most affected populations.

The event was witnessed by Deputy County Commissioner of Kapedo, Franklin Okuta, area Police Commandant William Oyugi, and Sub-County Administrator Lomeyen Ewoi.
