The 11th edition of the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Games officially kicked off on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the Mumias Sports Complex in Kakamega County. The event, graced by several county governors led by host Governor Fernandes Barasa, is a celebration of sportsmanship and cultural diversity.

Governor Barasa emphasized the significance of KICOSCA as a platform for nurturing sporting talent and fostering unity among counties. “We are aware that the counties are facing a huge financial crisis at the moment, however, the council remains thankful to all the counties that have sent teams to the competition,” he said.

The five-day event features a wide range of competitions, including football, handball, basketball, netball, squash, badminton, tug of war, scrabble, netball, chess, volleyball, pool, golf, table tennis, and darts. This year’s edition also introduces choir competitions and cultural dances to the lineup.

Governor Barasa highlighted the economic opportunities presented by the event, encouraging local businesses to capitalize on the influx of visitors. “This event is a perfect platform for residents to showcase its prowess in hosting local and international tournaments as Kenya’s talent hub with a vibrant sporting fan base,” he added.

The governor said he was honoured to assume the patronage of the KICOSCA Council after taking it from Meru Governor Mwangaza Kawira. The Governor was presented a chain and torch from the West Pokot Governor and chair of the Council of Governors Sports and Culture Committee, Simon Kachapin, as he assumed the role.
