COUNTY INSPECTS PROGRESS OF FLLOCA SUPPORTED WATER PROJECT

Turkwel, November 28, 2024 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

A county inspection team has expressed satisfaction with the progress of the first phase of the Nanyangkipi Water Project, which is supported by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program.

Chairing the inspection team, Director for Climate Change George Dung Emase highlighted that the Nanyangkipi initiative was one of 32 water projects identified through public consultations across Turkana County. He added that FLLoCA is supporting a total of 33 projects in the region, with 25 of them already underway.

“The local community prioritized water projects during the identification stage to address domestic needs, agricultural production, and other uses,” Emase said.

Engineer Fredrick Rukoo, the Deputy Director for Water Services in charge of Planning and Design, reported that critical milestones, including a hydrological survey, drilling, test pumping, and capping, had been successfully completed.

He revealed that the test pumping indicated an impressive borehole yield of 12 cubic meters per hour.

Engineer Rukoo further outlined plans for the project’s second phase, which will involve equipping the borehole with solar-powered pumping systems and constructing utility features such as tap stands, animal troughs, and a piping network.

The Nanyangkipi Water Project is anticipated to transform the village by enabling irrigation farming and improving access to water for the local population.

Faith Asimit, a representative of the Nanyangkipi community, expressed optimism about the project’s impact. “This will significantly reduce the distances we have to travel to fetch water, improving life for everyone in our village,” she said.

The project is part of a broader county initiative to enhance water security and climate resilience in Turkana.
