GOVERNOR LOMORUKAI HIGHLIGHTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS IN STATE OF THE COUNTY ADDRESS

Lodwar, 3rd December 2024 (Governor’s Press Service) – Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai delivered his second State of the County Address today, highlighting the County Government’s progress and outlining development plans for Turkana.

Addressing Members of the County Assembly, the Governor reaffirmed his dedication to advancing transformative initiatives across key sectors, emphasizing the central role of water in his Nine-Point Development Agenda. He said the County Government had completed 19 water projects, enhancing access to clean and safe water for communities.

Other achievements include the upgrading of water supply systems in Lodwar and Kakuma municipalities and the installation of reverse osmosis plants in Lokaparparae and Kaituko to combat water salinity. He added that ongoing aquifer assessments in Lotikipi and Napuu are aimed at securing sustainable water resources for the future.

Governor Lomorukai also highlighted strides in agricultural development, with a Ksh. 148 million investment revitalizing irrigation schemes in areas such as Nakwamoru, Morulem, and Elelea.

These efforts have significantly boosted food production, yielding 131,906 bags of maize and 83,300 bags of sorghum, alongside improved horticultural production. He said farmers have benefited from access to affordable farm inputs, while fishing cooperatives around Lake Turkana have been empowered with new gear and boats, enhancing commercial fishing activities.

Healthcare advancements were another focal point of the Governor’s address. A Ksh. 119 million consignment of medical supplies has strengthened service delivery across 234 health facilities. At the Lodwar County Referral Hospital, improvements include expanded surgical capacity to reduce patient wait times.

He said economic empowerment initiatives have also been prioritized, including a Livestock Restocking Programme, targeting 1,200 households with the distribution of 12,000 goats and sheep.

The county boss said infrastructure investments in livestock markets are improving access to organized trading spaces, supporting the livelihoods of traders and pastoralists alike.

Governor Lomorukai stated that peacebuilding remains a cornerstone of the County Government’s agenda. He commended recent efforts, such as the high-level peace caravan involving leaders from Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan, which facilitated dialogue and strengthened cross-border relations.

He said the county has also invested in resettlement schemes for conflict-affected areas, ensuring stability and security for vulnerable communities.

He highlighted achievements in education, with over Ksh. 534 million allocated to the County Education Fund, benefiting 64,924 students through bursaries and scholarships. Enhanced support for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), including feeding programs and teacher recruitment.

The Governor also emphasized the county’s progress in community land registration, urban development, climate resilience, and infrastructure improvements.

He expressed gratitude to the County Assembly for their collaboration and called for continued unity in pursuing Turkana’s shared vision for prosperity.

The Governor was accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr John Erus among other senior County Government officials.
