TURKANA COUNTY AND PLAN INTERNATIONAL PARTNER TO ENHANCE WATER SERVICE DELIVERY

Turkana County has partnered with Plan International to enhance water service delivery by supporting KALWASCO in developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

The initiative aims to improve the quality of water services in Turkana, ensuring compliance with WASREB regulations. The lack of standardized procedures has previously led to inconsistencies in service delivery, including inaccurate billing, delayed repairs, and limited access to water quality reports.

Director of Water Services, Paul Lotum, emphasized the importance of SOPs in fostering transparency and accountability. “This partnership is crucial for meeting WASREB’s requirements and improving service quality,” he said.

Jessica Lomongin, head of Plan International’s Climate Proofing WASH Services program, highlighted the long-term benefits of the SOPs. “By implementing these procedures, we are not only ensuring regulatory compliance but also promoting the sustainable management of water resources,” she said.

KALWASCO’s Managing Director, Zacharia Etukon, acknowledged the challenges posed by the absence of SOPs, particularly in billing and service delivery. He expressed optimism that the new procedures would improve the company’s operations.

The two-day training session covered key areas such as conflict resolution, grievance redress, performance management, and water quality monitoring. KALWASCO is urged to engage stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the SOPs and build trust with the community.

The collaboration between the County Government, Plan International, and KALWASCO is a significant step towards improving water service delivery in Turkana, ensuring a more reliable and efficient water supply for the region’s population.
