Turkana County has embraced a new Private Sector Engagement Framework (PSEF) introduced by the Kenya Urban Sector Program (KUSP) to foster sustainable urban development and economic growth.
The framework aims to strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors, leveraging the potential of businesses to contribute to infrastructure development, service delivery, and community well-being.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Physical Planning, and Urban Areas Management, Faith Aletia, emphasized the importance of aligning private sector initiatives with community priorities. “The PSEF provides a platform for businesses to actively participate in development projects and drive positive change,” she said.
The launch of the framework brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, business owners, and community representatives. Participants expressed enthusiasm for the initiative and discussed potential areas of collaboration.
Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP) National Coordinator Solomon Ambwere lauded the collaborative spirit and highlighted the transformative potential of public-private partnerships. “This framework will enable local businesses to drive meaningful development and contribute to the county’s overall progress,” he said.
Pilot projects have already been initiated in Turkana’s urban areas, demonstrating the positive impact of public-private partnerships. Lodwar Municipality Manager, Mr. Tukei, expressed optimism about the potential for job creation and economic growth.
Urban Chief Officer Peter Lomorukai emphasized the importance of community involvement in development projects. “By engaging the private sector and the community, we can ensure that projects meet the needs and aspirations of our residents,” he said.
The successful implementation of the PSEF in Turkana County has the potential to serve as a model for other counties in Kenya. Stakeholders from the State Department for Urban and Housing, the Council of Governors, and KUSP expressed confidence in the framework’s ability to drive sustainable urban development.
