The County’s Department of Social Protection in collaboration with State Department of Social Protection and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) have reviewed the different aspects in the Turkana County Social Protection Policy.
The County Attorney Ruth Emanikor, who led the review, expressed her commitment to ensure that the Policy is finalized. Once finalized, she said the Policy would benefit many vulnerable, marginalized people and those at the risk of being left behind.
Mark Amiyo, the Director of Social Protection, lauded UNICEF for the support to facilitate the development of the policy, noting that the proposed social protection policy will be designed to bridge existing gaps in social protection, and address issues such as fragmented legislation, lack of coordination, and insufficient funding.
He further said that the proposed legislation is expected to be a milestone in enhancing the capacity and opportunities for the poor and vulnerable in improving their welfare in alignment with government’s commitment to realization of economic and social rights.
