LOIMA’S KEKORONGOLE RESIDENTS FORM SACCO TO BOOST SAVINGS AND ACCESS TO CREDIT

Turkwel – January 17th, 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

Residents and traders in Kekorongole, in Loima Sub-county, have established a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO) to enhance financial inclusion and provide affordable credit facilities for small business owners.

The SACCO was formally recognized during a ceremony in Turkwel Ward where the Director of Cooperatives and Marketing, Shemmy Ebulon, presented the official certificate of registration to the cooperative’s elected leadership.

Director Ebulon emphasized that the SACCO would benefit not only traders but also the wider community by fostering a culture of savings.

“We have so far facilitated the formation of over 60 SACCOs across Turkana, and we remain committed to supporting them through their formative years,” said Director Ebulon.

An elected official of the cooperative, Petronilla Nanok, revealed that the motivation to establish the SACCO stemmed from county-led sensitization efforts on financial inclusion.

“After seeing new SACCOs being formed across the county, Kekorongole residents and traders felt the need to create their own. With guidance from county officials, we took the bold step and made it happen,” said Nanok.

Director of Administration, Ruth Esekon, encouraged members to maintain their enthusiasm and work towards strengthening the SACCO, urging them to uphold transparency and best practices in financial management.

To equip the leadership and members with the necessary skills for sustainable growth, cooperative officers led by James Akorot conducted training sessions on best practices in SACCO management.
