MULTI-SECTORAL TEAM MEET OVER PROPOSAL TO EXPAND REFUGEE HOSTING LAND IN KAKUMA AND KALOBEYEI

Lodwar, 22nd January 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

To accommodate the growing refugee population in Kakuma Refugee Camp and the Kalobeyei settlement scheme, a multi-sectoral team held a consultative meeting in Lodwar to discuss a way forward.

This meeting included representatives from the County Government, the Department of Refugee Services (DRS), the National Land Commission (NLC), and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

The meeting comes after a formal request from UNHCR to the County Government, requesting more land for settlement of refugees.

The need for expansion comes in response to an increasing influx of refugees, with up to 250 new arrivals being recorded daily, according to UNHCR.

Speaking during the meeting, Lands CECM Faith Aletia emphasized the County Government’s commitment to protecting community interests as the trustee of public land.

She assured stakeholders that any decisions made would be guided by community involvement and adherence to due process.

“The County Government is committed to ensuring that land assessments, negotiations with local leaders, and consultations with civil society representatives are conducted transparently. Additionally, sustainable land use planning will be prioritized,” said CECM Aletia.

During the meeting, Robert Loyelei (Chief Officer, Physical Planning), Davies Munialo (Director, Physical Planning), Joseph Egiron (Director Land Survey), Ekai Nabenyo (Director, Legal Services), Edwin Chabari (DRS) and Opundo Wilfred (UNHCR) made presentations on various considerations for the proper execution of the land allocation request.
