COUNTY, INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FELLOWSHIP PARTNER IN BUILDING YOUTH CAPACITY

Lodwar, 4th February 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

The County Department of Gender and Youth Affairs has launched a transformative partnership with the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) to equip local youth with practical skills over a three-month weekend training program.

The initiative targets marginalized groups, focusing on hospitality, hairdressing, beauty therapy, computer literacy, and other work readiness skills.

Chief Officer for Gender and Youth Affairs Elim Joseph Epuu emphasized on sustainability, with graduates expected to mentor peers and establish community-based enterprises, thereby creating a ripple effect of economic empowerment.

CCO Epuu reiterated that the engagement underscores Turkana’s commitment to addressing systemic barriers to education and employment, particularly for women and vulnerable communities.

“By integrating hands-on training with mentorship, the initiative not only builds technical expertise but also fosters resilience and self-reliance among participants,” Epuu stated.

A representative of IYF Margate Paspas confirmed that the program prioritizes inclusivity, extending opportunities to college students in Lodwar, street youth and families, and formerly incarcerated individuals, ensuring no one is left behind. “Future plans include scaling the program to Kakuma to take care of the refugee community,” she added.

Deputy Director in charge of Youth Affairs Ekidor Linus Namoe remarked on the county’s recent strides in vocational training partnerships aimed at curbing high school dropout rates and the limited training infrastructure.

Among the beneficiaries is Urban Akuuri, a youth-led enterprise by Purity Natabo and Magdaline Kotol, specializing in event organizing and outdoor catering, which aims to expand its services through enhanced technical and business management skills.
