The Turkana County Directorate of Climate Change convened a multi-sectoral planning meeting to review and refocus the Turkana County Climate Change Action Plan (2023–2027) under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program.
The annual meeting aimed to align interventions with emerging climate priorities and prevent duplication of efforts across the county’s 30 wards.
Speaking during the meeting, George Emase, the Director for Climate Change, highlited the need to strengthen community capacity in agriculture, livestock, and environmental conservation for sustainable development.
“Most FLLoCA projects include a water component, but we must also prioritize agroforestry by encouraging communities to plant indigenous fruit-bearing trees. This will help combat climate change and soil erosion,” Emase stated.
He highlighted that FLLoCA, a World Bank-funded initiative, currently supports 33 projects in Turkana. Additionally, 17 newly drilled boreholes are set to be equipped to improve access to water in the 2023/2024 financial year.
The meeting covered critical issues such as the progress of FLLoCA projects, local community engagement, involvement of Ward Climate Change Planning Committees, and strategies for climate resilience in water management and agriculture.
County officials in attendance from directorates of Climate Change, Livestock Production, Disaster Management, Environment and Natural Resources.
Representatives from partner organizations such as SAPCONE, Lotus Kenya Action for Development Organization, Kenya Red Cross Society, BOMA, Danish Refugee Council, Kenya Forestry Research Institute, and National Drought Management Authority also participated in the discussions.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of stakeholders to strengthen climate adaptation measures and enhance collaboration to build climate resilience in Turkana County.
