Turkana County Government will increase the 349-hectare Nasinyono Irrigation Scheme by a further 100 hectares to utilize the mega water pan.
The water pan project, part of a climate resilience-building initiative under the Financing Locally Led Climate Change Action (FLLoCA), has been designed to enable the expansion of climate smart agricultural activities in the area.
The County Government’s Department of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change is implementing the project, which involves the construction of a mega water pan with a capacity of up to 30,000 cubic meters.
According to the County Chief Officer for Natural Resources and Climate Change, Joseph Ekalale Imoni, the pan will be equipped with accessories, including a solarized pumping system, to ensure efficient water distribution to support irrigation-fed agriculture in Nasinyono, Lokichoggio Sub-County.
“The clearing of bushland for the expansion has already commenced. Once complete, the project will enable year-round farming, reduce dependency on rain-fed agriculture, and contribute to climate adaptation efforts in Turkana County,” Ekalale stated.
He added that the project aimed to bring more community members into irrigation-based farming, enhance food security, and provide a sustainable livelihood source in the semi-arid region.
Local farmers and community leaders have welcomed the initiative, citing its potential to increase agricultural productivity, improve household incomes, and provide employment opportunities.
The county government has assured stakeholders of continuous engagement throughout the project’s implementation, ensuring inclusivity and sustainability.
The groundbreaking exercise was witnessed by county officers from the irrigation and lands directorates.
