More than 20 county government officials have completed a three-day training on disaster response, aimed at enhancing preparedness and mitigating the impact of potential disasters.

The training, supported by the Kenya Red Cross Society, focused on anticipatory action and the establishment of social mechanisms to improve shock response.

The Chief Officer for Administration and Disaster Management, David Maraka, described the initiative as part of the County Government’s broader strategy to strengthen disaster risk management and safeguard vulnerable communities.

“The training aligns with the National Anticipatory Action Plan, equipping participants with the knowledge to enhance community resilience, take early precautions, and mitigate adverse impacts,” said Maraka.

He further emphasized the county’s commitment to developing a County Disaster Risk Management Policy in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society and the National Government.

“This policy will guide future training and streamline disaster response efforts across the county,” he added.

Patience Kitonga, a lead trainer and programs coordinator with the Kenya Red Cross Society, underscored the importance of cascading the acquired skills to the ward and village levels through county government structures.

“By educating communities on potential disasters and their role in mitigation, we strengthen grassroots preparedness and response,” she explained.

The participants, drawn from sub-county and ward administration, livestock development, agriculture, social protection, water, climate change, health, and economic planning, committed to developing Anticipatory Action Plans for their respective areas.
