Quarry workers at the Nalingangor stone extraction and processing site in Loima have officially formed a cooperative society to enhance their operations and welfare.
The group received its registration certificate from the County Directorate of Cooperatives and Marketing, paving the way for improved business opportunities and collective bargaining power.
The Director for Cooperatives and Marketing, Shemmy Ebulon, confirmed that the groups had met all the regulatory requirements, including election of the pioneer management committee and the installation of a supervisory committee.
“Formation of this cooperative is just the beginning, you now have a duty to grow it so that it can serve your needs sustainably,” said Director Ebulon while issuing the certificate of registration to the newly elected chair, Benson Ebei.
From the proceedings of the inaugral meeting, the cooperative leaders and all members approved the appointment of the county government as the general auditor while setting a borrowing limit bar at Kshs 10 million.
While assuming his position as chair, Ebei pledged to work towards creating a vibrant cooperative society that sustainably uplifts the livelihoods of the members.
According to the new chair, the immediate focus will be directed towards aggressive recruitment of new members and strengthening of the cooperatives’ governance structure.
The platform provided an opportunity for county officials to sensitize members on best practices associated with cooperatives movement.
Ruth Esekon (Director Administration), several cooperative officers, and Joyce Amojong (Trade officer) were also present.
