The county government, in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP), is developing a plan to integrate local farmers into the supply chain for a three-year school feeding program targeting Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) and lower primary schools across the county.

The initiative, discussed during a stakeholder meeting, seeks to provide a sustainable solution to food insecurity while offering market opportunities to small-scale farmers.

“This program will not only address food insecurity but also create economic opportunities for small-scale farmers who often struggle with market access,” Sarah Ayodi, WFP Team Lead, said.

The plan aims to establish a structured supply system that ensures a steady flow of locally sourced food to schools, boosting both agricultural productivity and the nutrition of school-going children.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Sports, and Social Protection, Willyjustus Lopeyok Akwalata, commended WFP for its continued support in feeding ECDE learners.

He emphasized that the initiative would significantly reduce the risk of malnutrition among children.

CECM Akwalata further advocated for the inclusion of a lunch program, noting that learners spend more than 75% of their day in school and require a nutritious midday meal to support their learning and growth.

Additionally, he acknowledged WFP’s role in supporting the development of a county social protection policy, revealing that the public participation phase had been concluded and that the draft policy was now being processed for approval and formal adoption.

Raphael Nyasio (Director of Human Resources), Alice Ejem (Deputy Director, ECDE), Walter Matsotso, and Kiziah Kirongi from WFP were also present at the meeting.
