NEWLY FORMED YOUTH PARLIAMENT TO ADVOCATE FOR WASH SUSTAINABILITY IN TURKANA

County Department of Health and Sanitation, in collaboration with Lotus Kenya Action for Development organization (LOKADO), has engaged the newly formed County Youth WASH Parliament that seeks to advocate for clean and safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene to WASH policymakers.

The training, targeting two young individuals per sub-county, focused on champion for policies, innovations, and research that will ensure safe water, sanitation and hygiene, thus improving WASH outcomes.

Speaking at the meeting, County Water Sanitation and Hygiene Coordinator Reuben Kibyego, stated that the youth parliament should champion to ensure access to clean and safe water; a fundamental right that enhances health, dignity, and well-being.

“Engaging the youth in WASH programs is crucial in lobbying for resource mobilisation, hence promoting inclusivity,” he said.

He also acknowledged the youth parliament concept, terming it as a foundation of youth-led advocacy, where they lead a sustainable change in WASH programs.

LOKADO Program Coordinator, Dennis Ekiru, outlined that the inclusion of youth parliament offers a long-term solution for water sanitation and hygiene.

He added that youth held the key to sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene, from championing local clean-ups to commending WASH-friendly policies and awareness creation in WASH.

Turkana College and University Students Association Chair Elburs Ewoi stressed the importance of youth participation in WASH interventions, adding that, it will empower young people in promoting sustainable WASH practices.

Present at the meeting were County Health Management Team, Members of Turkana Youth Parliament and LOKADO officials.
