The newly formed Turkana Youth WASH Parliament for the SDGs has vowed to amplify advocacy efforts for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), and increased funding for all WASH related initiatives by the County Government and development partners.

Led by their Deputy Speaker Ms Kaaleng, and other officials, the youth-led group took center stage, making a compelling case for improved water access and sanitation services.

In their presentation, they emphasized that “Water is life, Sanitation is dignity, and Hygiene is health,” underscoring the critical role of WASH in human well-being and sustainable development.”

This Parliament looks forward to a situation where water is given the attention it deserves. We believe that water is the foundation of all livelihoods and it’s availability should be a priority,” Lokarach said.

County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Water Services, Patrick Losike Lokaimoe, commended the Youth WASH Parliament for their commitment to bridging the gap between planning and service delivery.

“This team will play a crucial role in creating demand for water services and educating communities on the reality of water scarcity. Their advocacy will also strengthen water conservation efforts,” the CECM stated.

The Turkana Youth WASH Parliament, an initiative supported by the County Government and the Welthungerhilfe (WHH) in partnership with Lotus Kenya Action for Development Organization (LOKADO), aims to engage young people in policy advocacy, innovation, and awareness creation on WASH issues.

Philip Ewoton, the Head of Welthungerhilfe (WHH), revealed that the Youth WASH Parliament is currently being piloted in Turkana and Marsabit, with aspirations of expanding into a fully-fledged advocacy unit.

The Parliament’s involvement in the World Water Day celebrations was facilitated through an innovative exhibition approach, which allowed key stakeholders to interact with the group and understand their vision.
