Lokwar farmers are set to benefit from a major rehabilitation of the Logum Surface Irrigation Scheme, a project aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and food security in Kaputir Ward, Aroo Sub-County.

The 123-acre upgrade initiative includes bush clearing, land levelling, construction of secondary on-farm canals, and installation of hydraulic control structures to enhance irrigation efficiency by ensuring a more reliable water supply for farmers.

Speaking at the project’s handover ceremony, County Director of Irrigation and Land Reclamation, Richard Lokoyan, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the contractor and the project implementation committee to ensure timely completion.

He also stressed the need for quality workmanship by the contractor to maximize long-term benefits of the revamped scheme for the community.

Deputy Director of Administration, Dorcas Ejore, reaffirmed the project’s alignment with the Governor’s vision for food security.

“This initiative belongs to the community. Farmers must take ownership and work towards achieving the Governor’s goal of producing over 300,000 bags of local produce,” she said.

Kaputir Ward Member of County Assembly, Hon. Michael Ekaale, thanked Governor Lomorukai for prioritizing the ward in irrigation development.

He called for continuous technical oversight to ensure the project’s success.

“We also need a consistent water supply as we await the County Government’s delivery of 1.3 tonnes of assorted seeds for our farmers,” he added.

To oversee implementation, a seven-member project management committee has been established.

Lokwar residents welcomed the initiative, recognizing its potential to transform local agriculture.

“With a rehabilitated scheme and a dependable water supply, we can now plan for uninterrupted farming, leading to higher yields,” said Dickson Edapal, Chairman of the Project Implementation Committee.

The handover event, attended by key county officials and community representatives, marked a major milestone in efforts to strengthen food security in the region.
